Tri-State Heating Symposium set for Oct. 24

FREEPORT, Ill.  – With colder weather approaching, individuals and businesses may wonder how they’ll find room in their budget to pay for heating costs. And although natural gas is relatively plentiful and inexpensive in the Midwest, not all residents and businesses are connected to the pipeline. Biomass as a cost-effective heat source is the topic for the Tri-State Heating with Biomass Symposium on Thursday, Oct.

Fire Prevention Week: VFD breakfast Oct. 13

The annual Vinton Fire Department Pancake Breakfast is Sunday October 13th from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets are $5 each and preschoolers get in free. Same menu as always; pancakes, eggs and sausage. We will also be selling some of the leftover merchandise from the Convention.   The VFD will be very busy this week visiting classrooms along with classrooms and homeschooled students visiting us for Fire Prevention Week.

Naturalists offer dutch oven cooking session, Oct. 12

Learn the fine art of Dutch Oven Cooking, Saturday Oct 12, at the Benton County Nature Center, from 9 a.m. to noon. Pre-register by Oct. 10; cost is $5 per person. Naturalists Karen and Aaron will teach the "Savor the Flavor" class, which includes making fall brunch items and then sampling the creations. Call (319) 472-4942 to register.

Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church Celebrating 150 Years

The Mt. Auburn United Methodist Church is celebrating 150 years of ministry and 100 years in their present building on Sunday, October 13, 2013. There will be a worship service of praise and celebration at 11:15 a.m., immediately followed by a potluck meal. There will be a special program at 2:00 p.m. Please come for any or all of these events and help us celebrate God's grace.

Chris Norton to speak at Fields of Faith event Oct. 2

Former Decorah Viking Chris Norton will share his story of faith and recovery  Wednesday. A college football player who suffered a devastating spinal cord injury will share his story of faith and recovery during the annual Fields of Faith event at Union High School this Wednesday evening, Oct. 2. Norton, who was injured in 2010 while playing for Luther, will be one of several speakers at the event at 7 p.m. at Union High School. The event will take place on high school football field or in the gym, in case of extreme cold or rainy weather.

Popcorn season in Vinton for the Cub Scouts

 It's cub scout popcorn time.  Cub Pack 47 has started selling popcorn. Prices range from $10 to $50 depending on the size and packaging. Examples include white cheddar, sea salt splash, white ruby, microwave butter, peanut butter cup, and more.  This year there is a tin with 5 chocolate flavors for $50.  All tons feature artwork from Terry Redlin.

St. Mary Catholic Church plans blessing for new gathering space

The public is invited to the dedication of the new areas of St. Mary Church Oct. 6 The community is invited to join the parishioners of St. Mary Catholic Church for Mass and the blessing or their new gathering space on Sunday, October 6. Archbishop Michael Jackels will be on hand to bless the space and celebrate Mass at 2 p.m. A meal will be served immediately following. All are welcome! There will NOT be a 10:30 am Mass that day.

Embroidery Club to meet Oct. 5

We are so exited to announce that Embroidery Club will be Saturday morning October 5th at 9:30 AM. at the Viking Sewing store. We have decided to have Club a week later on Saturday, to have a chance of getting more of the new things in to show you!, The whole morning will be spent seeing the new products, sewing machines and patterns that were shown at Orlando convention.
